Here is a video demo of a world engine named Outerra. Which can take real satellite data from Earth and interpret it onto a  planet sized map. Oh and you can zoom in and out across the globe at will, from a blade of grass to orbit. Somebody is obviously making Voodoo happen in Slovakia, it’s in the early stages and still clunky and resource heavy, but the potential is mind blowing for video game scope.

The developer is also using the engine to create a world colonization game which is called Anteworld. You can download a world demo, pre purchase the final game or read more about it here. Apparently it only works with ATI cards at the moment, sorry Nvidia folk!
